Not everything that looks like celiac disease… is celiac disease.

Chronic diarrhea.
Weight loss.
Malabsorption.
Nutrient deficiencies.

Sounds like celiac disease, right?

There’s another condition called tropical sprue that can look almost identical.

And no—this isn’t from accidentally eating gluten on vacation.

Same part of the body.
Similar damage.
Very different cause.

Here’s the difference that actually matters:

  • Celiac disease → autoimmune reaction to gluten
  • Tropical sprue → likely triggered by an infection, most often in tropical regions like parts of the Caribbean, South Asia, and Southeast Asia

Both damage the small intestine.
Both interfere with nutrient absorption.

But treatment is where they split:

  • Celiac disease → lifelong strict gluten-free diet
  • Tropical sprue → antibiotics + folate (and sometimes B12)

One is autoimmune.
One is treatable—and potentially reversible.

This is why celiac isn’t just “I feel bad when I eat gluten.”

Symptoms can overlap.
Causes don’t.

You don’t need to worry about rare conditions like this—
unless you’ve recently traveled and been diagnosed with celiac disease.

From the outside, it all looks the same—
but what’s happening underneath couldn’t be more different.

Same symptoms doesn’t mean same disease.

Tropical sprue is rare—but it’s one of those things that’s good to have in the back of your mind.
It’s proof that something can look and feel exactly like celiac disease… and still be completely treatable.

Most of the time, this won’t affect your day-to-day life.
This is the kind of knowledge that’s fun at a cocktail party—or maybe wins you a Jeopardy question— but it also adds to a deeper understanding of celiac disease that most people never get.

And honestly, this is the kind of thing worth passing along—because most people have never even heard of tropical sprue and it might help them one day!
