Australia really tried to treat celiac disease with hookworms. Twice.
No… seriously.
Between two clinical trials, 70 adults with celiac disease volunteered to be intentionally infected with human hookworms and then undergo controlled gluten challenges.
Here’s what happened:
• Some participants reported fewer symptoms
• The hookworms survived just fine
• Villous damage continued
In other words…
The immune system may have calmed down a little…
…but celiac disease kept doing what celiac disease does.
So no… hookworms did not become the future of celiac treatment.
And honestly?
Thank goodness.
Living gluten-free in a gluten-covered world means I’ve seen some wild celiac science…
…but this one might be the weirdest.
Did you know this happened? And how far would you go for a real treatment?
