In this series about celiac diagnosis today is about the third stage – Overboard!!!

At this point, I’ve figured out what I can eat and I’m going to be hyper vigilant about being gluten free. Nothing can ever be in the vicinity of my gluten free food. People eating at the same table as me cannot possibly have bread on the table otherwise I might get sick. I cannot possibly go to a gluten filled bakery. I will die, literally die! I’m also going to tell everyone I’m gluten free and have celiac and cannot possibly ever come to their house because I will die, literally die!

I have to take a bottle of water to a restaurant because I cannot trust them to wash the dishes. If someone had a gluten drink in that glass and they washed it, how can I be sure they got the gluten off. What if they washed it with gluten items? OMG, I will die, literally die if I drink from that glass. I will bring my own bottled water to the restaurant and just sit quietly while you enjoy your plates of gluten filled poison.

Every eye twitch, leg cramp, upset tummy, or anything outside the ordinary is related to my celiac disease. I must have gotten glutened because I have a symptoms and it could not possibly be due to any other source. Even though I ate certified gluten free products on new dishes cooked in new pots and pans in my gluten free home, I know I got glutened.

I’ve been there. It is exhausting. It is hard enough to be gluten free, but in addition, to blame every issue on gluten makes it that much harder. Know that this stage is part of the process. You will get through it.

Also, this is one of the more dangerous phases in that you can limit your diet so much that you can lose out on important nutrients. If you get stuck here, it might be a good idea to talk to someone about where you are and how to get unstuck. Needing help in this phase is not unusual. I got help so that I could get to acceptance.
