Boy have I got a story for you…..

I was hanging out with a friend. I did not know their three-year-old was diagnosed with celiac disease. This is a fairly new diagnosis for the family. Anyway, their pediatric gastroenterology group recommended a dietician to help the family with the transition to a gluten free life.

The celiac diagnosis was new information to me, so I start asking a million questions. Then he said they were going to McDonald’s for dinner. I said that the celiac kiddo couldn’t eat anything there. He told me that the dietician told them that a bunless burger and French fries were gluten free and safe.

While I tried hard not to let my head explode in rage at the incompetence of this dietician, I had to calmly explain that the fries were coated in gluten. He said that the dietician told him that other fast food restaurants were cross contamination hazards, but McDonald’s was okay. Again, rage filled, I tried to remain calm.

We talked more and he talked about the whole family going gluten free to support the celiac patient. Then he asked me if Cool Ranch Doritos were gluten free. I had to go into a long explanation about how Lay’s labels their products, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, this family is about to get all of the gluten free love and education they can stand from me.

I know they read this blog. Hey, y’all. I hope you all look forward to all of my love.

It is terribly disappointing that a dietician didn’t think to look up whether foods were gluten free before recommending them to their celiac patients. That is a level of incompetence that is downright dangerous.

On a side note, I am so grateful this kiddo was diagnosed early with a highly supportive family.

What do you do when you find a friend or acquaintance has received terrible gluten free advice?
