Celiac disease is not new.

Not “modern.”

Not “something caused by processed food.”

Not “everyone suddenly has it.”

Nearly 2,000 years ago, Greek physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia described patients with chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and severe malnutrition.

He called it koiliakos

A Greek word meaning:

“Suffering of the abdomen.”

That word eventually became:

Celiac.

For nearly two millennia…

Doctors could recognize the disease.

They just didn’t know what was causing it.

This week, I’m taking you through the history of how medicine slowly figured out celiac disease…

One discovery at a time.

Did you know celiac disease was named nearly 2,000 years ago?
