I’ve been feeling a little heavy-hearted lately, and I realized we could all use a little humor today. So… here we go.

Some days, living with celiac disease feels less like a medical condition and more like a full-blown reality TV series. There’s drama. There are plot twists. There are villains. And there are moments of victory that feel way too emotional for what is technically “just dinner.”

And somehow, we’re all starring in it without ever auditioning.

So here are five ways celiac disease is basically a reality TV show — told with love, a little snark, and a whole lot of “if you know, you know.”

1. You’re Always Giving a Little Backstory

Every new person in your life gets the same gentle monologue:

“Hi, I can’t eat gluten. No, not even a little. Yes, I’m sure.”

2. There’s at Least One Surprise Plot Twist a Week

You think dinner is safe… and suddenly it’s not.

Cue the dramatic music, the closed bathroom door, and guttural sounds nobody should ever have to hear.

3. People Confidently Give Advice Like They’re Experts

“My sister’s cousin’s best friend has celiac disease and she eats gluten. Why can’t you?”

Well, besides the immediate nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue… I would prefer not to be violently ill, but I do appreciate the confidence in your incorrect medical advice.

4. There’s Always a Villain — But It Changes Every Episode

  • Sometimes it’s the shared fryer.
  • Sometimes it’s the rogue crouton.
  • Sometimes it’s that chaotic castmate who thinks it’s funny to add “just a little flour” to see if you’ll get sick.

5. You Didn’t Sign Up for This Show… But Here You Are

You’re navigating it. Learning from it. Laughing through it.

And somehow, you’re still showing up for the next episode with a good attitude — and your own snacks.

“We didn’t choose this cast, this script, or these plot twists — but we keep showing up anyway.”

If you live this life, I see you — the label readers, the snack carriers, the quiet detectives at restaurant tables. If you love someone who does, thank you for learning the rules of a show you never asked to be part of either.

We didn’t choose this cast, this script, or these plot twists. But we’re still showing up for every episode with humor, resilience, and our own food.

And honestly? That deserves a little applause.
