I’ve been thinking about one thing: celiac disease. And the more I think, the more I realize—celiac disease is not taken seriously.

Even doctors seem to shrug it off. One gastroenterologist even called it a “syndrome” instead of a disease. Why does celiac disease get dismissed so often?

This is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting more people than Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis combined. Yet, while those conditions get regular support groups and attention from doctors, celiac patients are left out. No meetings. No real support. No urgency.

Why Celiac Disease Is Ignored

There are two main reasons why celiac disease is brushed aside:

  1. It is “controlled” by diet.
  2. There is no medication to treat it.

A Gluten-Free Diet Isn’t Enough

Yes, the only treatment for celiac disease is a 100% gluten-free diet for life. But that’s not a cure—it’s just damage control.

  • 40% of celiac patients still have gut damage after two years gluten-free.
  • 20% still show significant damage after five years.
  • 1 in 3 restaurant meals labeled gluten-free contains gluten.

Even “gluten-free” packaged products fail safety tests. Gluten Free Watchdog finds mislabeled products all the time. Social media is full of stories of accidental gluten exposure—and most of the time, nobody can even figure out how it happened.

Because celiac doesn’t trigger dramatic, visible reactions like anaphylaxis, the suffering happens silently, at home. The general public never sees it.

No Drug, No Respect

Every other illness seems to have a pill.

  • Lactaid for lactose intolerance.
  • Insulin for diabetes.
  • Pancreatic enzymes for EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency).

But celiac disease? Nothing.

Without a medication to prevent gluten damage, the world treats celiac like a joke. People roll their eyes at gluten-free eaters, thinking it’s just a fad diet or a choice.

Until there’s a drug, until there’s visible suffering, celiac disease will keep being dismissed—and patients will keep paying the price in private.
