Considering Another Clinical Trial with a Gluten Challenge: Weighing the Risks and Benefits

I’m thinking about entering another clinical trial—this time, one that involves a significant gluten challenge.

My Last Clinical Trial Experience

From my previous celiac disease clinical trial, I learned a lot about how my body reacts to gluten. Specifically:

  • Gluten symptoms start within 2-4 hours – I experience vomiting, fatigue, and brain fog for 2-3 days.
  • Celiac blood tests didn’t change – Despite consuming large amounts of gluten (6g per challenge) over five months, my celiac antibody levels remained the same.

What This New Clinical Trial Involves

This study has a long and intense timeline, including:

  • An initial endoscopy
  • A single shot (possibly the investigational drug or placebo)
  • Six weeks of gluten challenges
  • A follow-up endoscopy
  • Monitoring for nearly a year and a half

My Concerns About the Gluten Challenge

I have serious concerns about this trial:

  1. The six-week gluten challenge could be brutal – If I get the placebo, I’ll be eating gluten for weeks without protection.
  2. The study lacks a crossover arm – Meaning, if I get the placebo, I may never get to try the drug.
  3. Rescue medication is offered – This is meant to help if symptoms get too severe, but the idea of needing it is unsettling.

Is This Clinical Trial Worth It?

I’m torn. This study could provide valuable celiac disease research insights, but at what cost? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Would you participate in a gluten challenge clinical trial?
