GlutenEase, GluteGone, Pure Encapsulations Gluten/Diary Digest, etc. are all commercially available supplements that claim to digest gluten.

Guess what, they don’t.

A study in 2019 looked at nine gluten degrading supplements.  Researchers placed some gluten in a Petri dish. They simulated the environment of a human stomach. Then they added gluten and one of the nine gluten degrading enzymes.  Then they measured how much of the gluten was degraded. Study for gluten degradation of nine enzymes-> https://shorturl.at/JOhSf

Only one supplement came through with any sort of gluten degradation.  Gluteguard is the one supplement that degraded gluten in the Petri dish. Gluteguard is a product out of Australia.

Further studies have shown that regular users of Gluteguard “report a high level of satisfaction”. Note this is not a double-blind, placebo controlled study with gluten challenge and endoscopy.  They just say people are happy with the product. Study here -> https://shorturl.at/6w0AY

If these products worked, they would be a cure for celiac disease.  We could just take this supplement and not worry about cross contamination.  If we took enough of it, we might even be able to return to a gluten diet.  But we can’t.

People will say their favorite gluten degrading product works great.  They take it every time before potential cross contaminated meals and they are fine.  No gluten symptoms. At the same time, if you gave them a TicTac and fed them gluten, they might say the thing. The placebo effect is a powerful thing!

TAK-062 has the potential to be a real gluten degrading enzyme. Phase 1 clinical trials show that TAK-062 degrades between 97% and 99% of gluten in a complex meal. A complex meal is more than just gluten – think hamburger on a gluten bun. The gluten consumed was between 1g and 6g of gluten. The degradation of gluten was complete between 20 and 65 minutes after consumption. Virtually all celiac patients react at 100mg of gluten contamination. TAK-062 would stave off a celiac reaction.
