Weird question….but I use my celiac in some sneaky ways.

Skipping Events – I can over commit myself. Promising to do something or be somewhere and need an excuse to not go. I say I’ve had a “Celiac Episode” and can’t make it. So, sorry. Gets me out of whatever I want every time. Note, you can not use this excuse ALL the time. But occasionally, it can come in handy.

Eating Gross Food – When invited to someone’s house, you are supposed to try everything offered to be polite. If there is something that looks gross, I say, “I’m so sorry. I have Celiac Disease and am very sensitive to cross contamination.” This also works against us when food looks delicious. But, we probably could not eat whatever it is anyway.

Checking your phone in the bathroom – You might need to make a quick run to the bathroom during a “celiac episode.” It’s also a handy hiding spot from your family, during a party, or just when you need a break. You can take a minute to yourself to take a deep breath.

Unfortunately, my family has caught on. They follow me into the bathroom or bang on the door.

Going to bed early or sleeping late – I am an early riser. I am not a late nighter, unless highly entertained. Occasionally, I sleep late or go to bed very early. I call it my “Celiac sleep”.

I get to pick the restaurant – There are a bunch of gluten free restaurants around me. When invited to dinner, I often get to pick the restaurant. Someone may give me an option to try a few places. However, I am often the final word on where we go. While sometimes burdensome, I always know I can get a safe meal.

How do you use celiac disease to your advantage?
