Has Celiac Disease Peaked? A new study says it has!

More from Digestive Diseases Week….Celiac disease may have peaked, especially in those over 65.

Researchers conducted a retrospective study on individuals diagnosed with celiac disease between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2021. They used data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project. The results demonstrate that the incidence of celiac disease in adults may have plateaued.

Researchers reviewed the electronic health records of both Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center. They found the peak of celiac disease diagnosis in adults occurred between 2009 and 2011. Since the peak, there has been a steady decline in adult celiac diagnosis, especially in those over 65.

The number of children being diagnosed has increased over the past two decades. Females are diagnosed at consistently higher rates. Theories suggest a few reasons for the increase in children’s diagnosis. One possibility is a shift to earlier diagnosis. Another reason could be an environmental effect that wanes over time as people age.

Tell me if you are seeing the same thing in your world – fewer adults being diagnosed and more kiddos.

I have another thought.  Celiac disease was not thought to exist in the US until the late 1990’s.  Many of the people that were not diagnosed as youngsters may be getting diagnosed in their 40’s and beyond.  The cohort of people born before the 1990’s may just now be getting diagnosed.
