I was diagnosed with celiac in 2013. I did not really start looking into celiac based social media groups until around 2017. I found a lot of things I had not thought of. My favorite discovery was that each incident of glutening was bringing me closer to death. Super scary stuff!
Once the panic wore off, I started researching. I dove into the scientific research. Reading, learning, and understanding the body of knowledge surrounding celiac disease.
Social media allows people to communicate. It allows people to share their stories, knowledge, and experiences. At the same time, not every reaction, rash, or eye twitch is related to gluten. Whether you have celiac disease, you are a super sensitive celiac patient, or you are gluten sensitive. Not everything is related to gluten.
When I say, distilled, unflavored liquor is gluten free, it is. The way distillation works means gluten is too big to be transferred to the final product. I often give links to articles from reliable sources confirming this statement. But the statement that distilled, unflavored liquor is gluten free is indisputable due to the way distillation works. Trust me, I have looked it up and you can too. A quick search about distillation and gluten will confirm everything I’m saying.
Reactions are arbitrary and open to interpretation as to the root cause. I believe that you are reacting to something in the alcohol. But is it gluten? No. And that’s where social media jumps the shark for me.
I do not question whether someone is having a reaction. Rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, emotional mood swings, and brain fog are all common symptoms. They can be caused by a million things. Is it sometimes gluten? Absolutely. Is it always gluten? I hope not. If so, you need to change your diet 😉
My point is that blaming gluten for everything is a slippery slope. Determining if gluten is the actual root cause of your reaction is vital. It leads to a better understanding of your disease.
