Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. There are a couple of types -squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are not considered life threatening cancers. They can be disfiguring when removed. Melanoma, depending on malignancy, size, and location can be both disfiguring and life threatening.
According to this meta-study, researchers found, “significantly increased incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in celiac disease patients compared to control data and no significant association between celiac disease and malignant melanoma incidence.” Link to article – https://loom.ly/PKDeSRs
This bigger study on cancers within celiac disease demonstrated no increase in malignant melanoma risk for celiac disease patients. Link to article – https://loom.ly/AkGVInc
Wear your sunscreen! Even though it isn’t necessary, some certified gluten-free brands of sunscreen are Alba, Arbonne, Badger, and Kiss My Face. Personally, I like Blue Lizard and it is gluten free.
Dermatitis Herpitformis or as I like to call it, celiac disease of the skin.
Dermatitis Herpitformis (DH) is the skin manifestation of celiac disease. The rash erupts after consuming gluten. Note, putting gluten on the skin does not cause a DH-flare, only ingestion. The rash is exceptionally itchy, watery blisters, on a bright red field. It commonly occurs symmetrically, as an example on the right and left elbow.. Most commonly, the rash appears on the buttocks, back of neck, scalp, elbows, knees, back, hairline, groin, or face. Dapsone and a gluten free diet are commonly used to treat DH.
I imagine the DH rash in my small intestines when I try to visualize what my small intestine looked like.
Anyway, that is a tour of the skin and celiac disease. Let me know if you want more.
