How do you handle dinner or social invitations?

With friends, they all know about my celiac disease and always offer to accommodate. Whether it is allowing me to pick the restaurant or letting me bring my own food to their dinner party, I sort of make the decisions.

With acquaintances or people I know less well, it becomes more nuanced. Luckily I live in a big city and can often find something I can eat….a salad, a burger without a bun, etc. Often I will excuse myself to go to the bathroom then pull the server aside to ask what i can eat.

Larger events where menus are set – I typically don’t eat. I will eat before and eat after, but not during the event.

How do you handle these situations?

I do pretty much the same. Most of my friends know and choose things I can be part of. I don’t hide it at restaurants and just look for things I can eat. Cross contamination is always the issue – and I’m in a small town with little choice for restaurants that have separate kitchens. But it’s a choice I’ve made not to carry a chicken breast around in my purse. Sometimes I’m still so surprised that I have this – yet I’ve done it for so long now, that I don’t think too much on it.
