Once upon an evening dreary, while I sorted, tired and bleary,
Halloween treats lay piled upon the counter by the door.
There were pumpkins, ghosts, and gummies, little chocolates promising yummies,
But I knew those pretty wrappers might be tricking me once more.
Quoth the celiac, “Read some more.”
Every sweet required inspection, every label my attention,
As I squinted at the tiny print like ancient days of yore.
With my glasses slipping, sliding, I found barley malt in hiding,
So it joined the other candy meant for callers at the door.
Quoth the celiac, “Read some more.”
Now my porch awaits its callers, tiny witches, caped high-flyers,
And the weary parents trailing them from door to door.
There’s candy for the choosing, Fireball for the grown-ups cruising,
And a bowl marked “Please ask,” where we’ll check the labels once more.
Quoth this Batgirl, “Have some more.” 🎃
