Gluten-free Cheez-Its are fun.
They are not progress.
We still cannot easily determine whether our intestines have healed.
We still may have to eat gluten for weeks to receive a diagnosis.
We still cannot routinely verify every meal before eating it.
We still do not have clear gluten labeling on every food or medication.
We still have no approved treatment beyond an exceptionally difficult diet.
Celebrate the crackers.
Then demand more.
Because convenience is not treatment.
A new snack is not medical progress.
And representation in the cracker aisle will not solve the most serious problems facing people with celiac disease.
The celiac community deserves better food.
But we also deserve better medicine, better testing, better laws and a treatment system that does not place the entire burden on the patient.
That is where our attention belongs.
