Header: 'Gluten Cheat Day Posts' with subtitle 'Why they bother me.' A green burger illustration is held by a hand on the right; Fat Celiac logo sits in the top-right corner.

Maybe this is just me.

But I really don’t like cheat-day posts.

You know the ones.

“If you could eat one gluten food again, what would it be?”

“What’s your cheat meal?”

“If you could have one thing with gluten tomorrow, what would you choose?”

I scrolled past these posts when I was newly diagnosed and I really dislike them now.

Here’s why.

I don’t really think about gluten foods much anymore.

I can make just about anything I want gluten free and, after a little practice, make it taste good.

I’m not stronger than anyone else and I certainly don’t have celiac disease figured out.

I just realized that spending time fantasizing about foods I can’t safely eat wasn’t doing me any favors.

For me, eating gluten purposefully isn’t an option.

So why spend energy thinking about it?

Maybe that’s why those posts rub me the wrong way.

Don’t get me wrong. There are foods I miss.

But I don’t spend much time wishing I could eat them anymore. I find a way to make them gluten free.

Is it the same?

Maybe, and honestly, I can’t remember anymore.

For me, life became a lot more peaceful and being gluten free became a lot easier when I stopped fantasizing about what I couldn’t have and focused on what I could.

Maybe that’s just 13 years of experience talking.

Or maybe I’m becoming that old woman with hair askew, bathrobe on, standing in her living room yelling, “Get out of my gluten free kitchen.”

Either way, am I the only one, or do cheat-day posts bother you too?
