Before gluten-free bread…

Before food labels…

Before doctors even knew what gluten was…

They treated celiac disease with…

🍌 bananas.

No, seriously.

In the 1920s, pediatrician Sidney Haas used what became known as the banana diet to help children with celiac disease.

And many of them improved.

At the time, doctors thought bananas were the treatment.

What they didn’t realize?

By removing bread, crackers, cereals, and other grains…

They were accidentally removing gluten.

It would take another two decades for medicine to fully connect the dots.

Sometimes science gets the right answer…

For the wrong reason.

Did you know bananas were once used to treat celiac disease?
